Paradox, Enigma and Catalyst for Change
“I know what it’s like to access the privilege of a zip code, but also be born in one that could have destined me to something else.” – Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez
For several weeks I’ve been gathering images of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s hands to take a closer look at how her hands reflect her unique ideas, qualities and personality. I’m excited to see she has the most unusual creases including the rare Suwon crease.
My initial impression is that she is sincerely coming from the heart. Take a look at the numerous creases just under her fingers in the top third of her palm. This territory relates to how we relate to our emotions, feelings, and sensitivities and tune into the world around us in various forms of empathy. The creases here give us an idea of how she connects with this energy and communicates her perceptions to others.
“It’s not just that I’m a woman of color running for office. It’s the way that I ran. It’s the way that my identity formed my methods.” – Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez
Her hands look very flexible and even double jointed in places. I wondered if she could be too easily swayed by others, but as the weeks went by I could see she uses her flexibility in words and smooth comebacks that deserve a black belt in the martial art of words and, of course, tweets. Direct, short and about as sweet as a spoonful of castor oil.
“It’s no wonder logical, compassionate ideas are called ‘radical’ when the present is dystopian. We’re living in the upside-down, asking for the rightside-up.” – Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

A Suwon Crease is formed by the conjoining of a beginning section of the head line (proximal transverse crease) with the heart line (distal transverse crease). It is a sub-class of the Simian Crease and what I call a cousin to the Sydney Line. See my previous post for illustrations and details about these transversal creases.
In Alexandria’s right hand, in the image above, you can see this deep crease coming in from the thumb side of the palm and touching the curving heart line in the area under the space between the ring and middle fingers. This creates a complex way of processing information that isn’t typical to most humans. In one sense, these conjoined lines could be seen as a flaw representing something developed differently in her hands. Usually, I see them in hands that are hyper flexible. The creases show how the hand developed ways to get a good grip with a flexible hand. A sort of overcoming of a hardship. Interestingly, the very common feedback I get from people that send me images of their Suwon Creases, is that they’ve had to overcome some kind of struggle at a very early age in life. The stories vary from illness, to absent parents, fending for self, caring for siblings and other tales of getting a grip early on.
“I understand the pain of working-class Americans because I have experienced the pain.” – Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez
In Hand Analysis, this combination would show how she processes emotions and thought. The beginning of the head line shows how you initiate expressing thought. Here it is unusually high and found in the area that the Ring of Solomon is found. This increases empathy and sensitivity to others feelings and state of mind or being. For the head line to be here it puts thought into a typically wordless area of feeling, enabling her to better express what she feels. Joining the heart line would form a direct line from head to heart. The combined creases create a complete transversal crease. This divides the top of the hand from the bottom which separates ‘reacting’ from ‘acting’, which gives her a unique way for dividing up and processing how she can look at the world from different angles than many of us.
In her left hand the heart line is broken. One part becomes crescent in shape and runs parallel to multiple creases that relate to various types of a configuration called the Girdle of Venus. This adds heightened sensations and sensitivities. See my earlier post on ASMR. The other part of the heart line reaches out and connects to the long head line that sweeps diagonally down her palm. This is a form of the Sydney Line, where the heart line joins the head line. (The Suwon mentioned above is the head line joining the heart line.)
The medical books refer to the Sydney Line as being associated with behavioral issues as a child. When studying the hands of those with this crease, I’ve come to the conclusion this association with behavior is a result of trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. The Sydney Line owner is not going to be easily squeezed into the wrong box. Born a rebel with a cause. They, as common to the Simian types, tend to be very focused and can have tunnel vision when something is important to them.
“We have to stick to the message: What are we proposing to the American people? Not, ‘What are we fighting against?'” – Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez
These unusual combinations of head and heart lines in both hands, show that she combines her heart with mind and mind with heart in every decision. The creases are not separate in either hand so she cannot easily separate the sense of feeling and emotions from logic and reasoning. To her this would be unnatural.
In both hands she has a head line that is attached to the life line for a good distance. This shows a strong attachment to family and loyalty to the team. The connection runs longer than in most hands. This would show it’s hard to break away from home or family and close ties. There’s a bit of contradiction here because of the Suwon in her right hand. A high set independent head line shows thinking independently. It could add to the rebel influence. Yet there, in the same hand is a lower and connected head line. Here we would see a switching of tracks, so to speak. She could have a tendency to want to go in almost blind loyalty with her team, clan or tribe. This might sometimes be a tug-a-war inside her. But if she’s on your side, you can be assured she has your back. With the strong emphasis on the upper portion of her palm, her heart still rules.
Another unusual feature clearly visible in the image above and somewhat visible in her right hand as well is a crease known as the Transverse Hypothenar Crease. The hypothenar is the area along the percussion or side of the hand from the area where the heart line crosses (under the metacarpophalangeal joint) down to the top wrist crease. A crease this deep is rare here. It is sometimes seen on newborns along with other temporary creases, but disappears as the hand develops. Medically it is associated with Coffin-Lowry Syndrome. But not all features that are associated with syndromes relate to having the syndrome. Usually there are a combination of features including facial features that appear when there is a syndrome.
In Palm reading circles this crease has been called an Intensity Line and a Voltage Line. A not so deep version is commonly found on people with various allergies and is called a Poison Line showing that the body has had a reaction to something. Sometimes it can show a sensitivity to alcohol. Either one that gets drunk too easily, a light weight, or someone who can ‘drink everyone under the table’. Horizontal creases are seen as dividing and sometimes blocking a flow of energy that moves along a vertical plane from the fingertips up the arm and back. It may end up relating to something that has yet to be determined.
(Currently, I and my students are actively researching this crease so if any readers have one and would like to share please send me a private message at my Facebook page. Link in the tabs at top of page or an email.)
“Congress is too old, they don’t have a stake in the game” – Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez
During the time period that the generation called the Millennials were arriving, a discussion was being had in New Age circles about the 1950’s & 60’s generations’ Star Child and the newly discovered Indigos. In the 90’s I began to notice teenagers who seemed to be unusually aware and wise as well as gifted, presenting hands with the most unusual and rare features. The features would seem to relate to some kind of glitch in formation or a unique situation during fetal development of features forming in unique synchronicity. This made me wonder if evolution is more about glitches that result in beings capable of thinking in new ways with new insights than about perfecting what is normal.
“I knew our community needed a very clear voice, and I think we deserved representation that rejected lobbyist funds and put our voters and our community first.” – Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez
I’ve enjoyed so much studying the hands of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. She’s a bright and shining newcomer and regardless if you agree with her politics or not, she’s stirring up a conversation. My writing this is not to agree or disagree with her views but to give a little insight into how she thinks and feels. I hope you have enjoyed it as well. Please feel free to share your (non-political) comments below while the comment section is open.
I love how an aha description of the whole emerges from a beautiful analysis of the parts.
Maybe improving on ‘normal’, isn’t such a bad idea after all.
Since I wrote this, I observed AOC turning to colleagues at the SOTU address and only stood up and applauded if her ‘team’ also stood up and clapped. Not independent like Kyrsten Sinema who boldly stood and clapped even after her colleague told her to “watch her a__”.
In AOC this would be an attribute of the head and life connected for such a long distance. This relates to the team player attitude I mentioned above, but also it can relate to insecurity and fear of acting alone.
This dilemma between wanting to boldly go in new directions and following her crowd may become her own self sabotage.
